Nuclear fission takes place when a very large Uranium nucleus splits into two smaller atoms. This releases huge amounts of energy as heat. Carbon dioxide is used as coolant in these, and other older British reactors, like the last Magnox reactor (Wylfa 1) which closed at end of 2015. It is denser than helium, and gives better thermal conversion efficiency. They must be engineered to create the ideal conditions, such as temperature and pressure.
